ICTAN: a cardio-protected centre

We have a semi-automatic external defibrillator and trained staff to assist in the first minutes of a cardiac arrest.

The Institute of Food Science and Technology and Nutrition (ICTAN-CSIC) is a cardioprotected space, with the necessary instrumentation and training to assist a person in the first minutes of a cardiac arrest. To this end, the centre has an Automated External Defibrillator – AED (located in the main hall, at the door of the Assembly Hall) and the necessary training in first aid and handling of the device.

A cardioprotected space saves lives. In addition, providing immediate attention before the medical teams arrive avoids possible sequelae in the heart of the person affected. According to the Spanish Heart Foundation, the use of a semi-automatic defibrillator applied within the first 5 minutes means that the chances of recovering from the arrest are multiplied by 2 to 4 times.

An early recognition accompanied by a warning to the emergency services and effective manoeuvres supported by an AED ensure an effectiveness of almost 100% in the first minute.
